Goals
Curb Appeal - Short Term Goals Enforcement of City Ordinances for Beautification of City
Attend board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting with list of unkempt properties, including but not limited to: abandoned vehicles, unkempt buildings, dilapidated buildings, cleanliness of neighborhoods, and problems with noise control.
To Establish and Publish a Beautification Plan, including but not limited to:
Contacting residents through neighborhood visits about cleaning up or fixing up their general area.
Get Rural Development involved for grant money that can be used to fix up or repair houses.
Get businesses involved in paint-up or fix-up on buildings in and around downtown and Yazoo City.
Landscape entrances to the city; organized neighborhood clean-up or selected districts in each political ward with appointed or elected persons in charge; etc.
Develop signage around city to direct visitors to local attractions.
Curb Appeal - Long Term Goals To implement and carry through on the Beautification Plan.
Quality of Life - Short Term Goals Promote More Involvement
Work to get city council meetings at a later time so that everyone can attend the meetings.
Better communication: Work with the Chamber of Commerce and the City to get a website to develop a community database for contact.
Help schools and parent center publicize open house for more community involvement.
Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club for youth structure activities.
Promote keep children in school.
Racial Harmony
Community togetherness (potluck supper) to promote oneness. Everyone bring someone of a different race.
Business and Workforce Development - Short Term Goals Install adequate signs identifying all industrial parks, sites and buildings and include a directory of existing tenants.
Create a partnership between the Chamber of Commerce, Holmes Community College and the WIN Job Center to develop a plan of action to enhance workforce training and education for citizens and businesses within the community.
Create a partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, HCC and Win Job Center to develop a plan of action to identify, attract and retain target industries for Yazoo City/Yazoo County.
Organize a team to work with the Chamber of Commerce to develop a promotional package showcasing Yazoo County’s most attractive features as incentives to commercial and industrial business prospects. Utilize the www.yazoo.org website to market the community to prospective businesses interested in locating to Yazoo City.
Establish a community information website.
Leadership - Shot Term Goals Vision Statement - Yazoo. New Vision. New Life
The hope of prosperity needs to be accompanied with the hope of peace in Yazoo. Achieving peace will be the key to the sustainability of any economic prosperity that may be achieved.
We must have both prosperity and peace in our vision. In this “New Vision” of Prosperity and Peace, economic prosperity will not last unless we address our difference and seek peace.
Create an effective leadership concept that will instill pride and give people a sense of hope and encouragement. People need to know that others care.
Community Relations: Identify those boards that are appointed by City and County Governing Officials in local mediums (newspapers, etc.). Also detail their purpose and qualifications for public review and comments. Improve use of available resources. Develop means that will improve visibility and collaboration of organizations/groups/religious entities.
Elected Officials: Encourage and petition all elected officials (city and countywide) to participate in not only the Model City Program, but also all other community events/activities. Stress the importance and necessity of their involvement. Establish a direct link between the community’s expectations and their continued service or election.
Law Enforcement: Plan community meetings that involve Law Enforcement Officials and the community to address areas of concern to improve the community’s involvement and understanding of Law Enforcement Officials as it relates to their community. Citizens should be encouraged to become active in the process of reducing crime in their neighborhoods.
Pride: Model City Festival Celebration to convey the message and concept. Will provide a wide assortment of activities. Rally for the common cause of Yazoo City. Targeted date: October 23, 2004 (Make a Difference Day).
Race Relations: Immediate establishment of a bi-racial committee known as the Peace Commission that will address issues that are race related. This is imperative for the success of the model city project and ultimate community improvement.
Marketing: Arrange an interview with Jackson area television stations to promote the Model City Plan and other events that are scheduled. This will serve as information to the community and surrounding areas.
